Ryan Potter (March 2019)
Barring some miracle - or the intercession of powerful individuals on his behalf - Ryan Potter, tragically only seventeen years old, is going to prison for a very long time. His (some would say obsessive) crush on Janey Vicars, one of the most popular and well-liked girls in the senior class above him, was common knowledge at his school. Also common knowledge was that she had been well out of his league - and had rejected him multiple times already. So, even had his blood, hair, fingerprints, and semen not been found not only at the scene of Janey's grisly murder, but on her brutalized (some might say ritualistically brutalized) body, he would likely have been a suspect. As it was, the evidence was overwhelming, the motive was clear, and his alibi was nonexistent. The case against him looked unbeatable.
This, of course, was largely because it had been engineered to seem that way. The predatory monster known as Father Dagon had once again singled out a mortal to bring to ruin, and had bent considerable effort toward that end. Collecting and planting the biological evidence had been trivially easy, as simple as collecting blood and hair from Ryan’s body as he slept, and semen from a sock under his pillow, and leaving them lying around in Janey’s house. Dagon, of course, killed Janey itself – no sense letting someone else have all the fun. Ryan, drugged, was blacked out in his backyard when the murder took place, erasing any alibi he might have had. Janey’s blood carefully smeared on his hands and shirt completed the look.
When backing someone into a corner, however, you always leave them an “out”. In Ryan’s case, it was irrefutable proof – in the form of an admittedly convenient cell phone video – that his next-door neighbor had done the killing. Included was video of a sleeping Ryan being drugged and later deliberately smeared with blood as he lay unconscious. Complete exoneration for the low, low price of his signature on a contract. That, and the small matter of protection from any who might remain convinced of his guilt.
